One of the most important parts of your article or blog is your headline. When you want to get people to your site to read what you are writing, learning to craft better headlines is the first step. If you learn how to write web headlines that get search engine results, you will see your traffic improve by a large margin.

Content is still king- as the old saying goes- but the first step to great content is a quality, effective headline. Here are some headline writing tips:

Clear and concise- You’ve heard it before and it sounds obvious but it is still commonly mistaken on the Web. Search engines want headlines that are to-the-point and your human readers also want to know exactly what they are getting if they click on your link.

Relevant- On the same topic as clear and concise, you  also need your headline to be relevant. The bait-and-switch tactic will not only make human readers angry but it will get you negative points with search engines like Google. Always be sure your headline is relevant to the topic of your article or blog post.

Keywords and phrases- You will hear about keywords and keyword phrases over and over again but they only work when you know how to use them correctly. Every word in your headline needs to have a purpose and keywords must be relevant.

Write like a searcher- What would you type in if you were searching for an article on your topic? If you want to craft headlines for the search engines, just think about what the person searching will be looking for. What words and phrases will they use to find content like yours?

Keep it short- You need to be sure your headlines are under 65 characters, the limit that will show up in Google. Anything longer will not show in search results. The first words of your headline are also the most important so be sure you get those important words and phrases in at the start.

These sound like pretty simple guidelines yet many people get in a hurry or think the headline is not that important anyway and they forgo these tips. Doing so can hurt your placement in the search engines and ultimately, your traffic to your content.
